Temple of Heaven, China

Temple of Heaven, China

In the heart of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven stands as a symbol of harmony between heaven and earth. This exploration traces its history, architecture, and imperial rituals, revealing the full majesty and symbolic precision of one of China's most iconic sites. Founded under the Ming dynasty and used by Ming and Qing emperors, the complex was the setting for the annual sacrifices and prayers for good harvests on which the legitimacy of the throne partly rested. Its plan encodes cosmology throughout: round forms for heaven set against square enclosures for earth, and a raised processional way linking the marble Circular Mound Altar to the triple-roofed timber Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
