Santo Domingo Church, Ecuador

Santo Domingo Church, Ecuador

A fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, and indigenous artistic traditions, the Santo Domingo Church in Quito, Ecuador, played a formative role in the emergence of the celebrated Quito School of art, and its architecture reflects the city's rich cultural blending. Built by the Dominican order in the colonial period, it stands on the plaza that carries its name at the southern edge of the historic center, its bell tower a fixed landmark on the skyline. Inside, a mudéjar coffered ceiling runs the length of the nave above gilded altarpieces, while the adjoining convent preserves cloisters and a collection of colonial painting and polychrome sculpture now shown as a museum.
