Chania's Old Town, the island's ancient capital, stands as one of Crete's finest examples of layered heritage—a vibrant place of prosperity and growth shaped through the ages by a unique blend of Venetian, Ottoman, Byzantine, and Greek cultures. Built over the ancient city of Kydonia, it keeps the street plan and fortifications laid out under Venetian rule, when the harbor was ringed with vaulted arsenals for shipbuilding and closed by a lighthouse at the end of its mole. Ottoman minarets, wooden balconies, and bathhouses overlay that fabric, alongside the quarters of the Jewish, Armenian, and Greek communities. Rebuilt after heavy bombardment in the Second World War, the old town remains the social heart of the city.
