Samobor Castle, Croatia

Samobor Castle, Croatia

Overlooking the medieval market town of Samobor, west of Zagreb in northern Croatia, this ruined hilltop castle was built between 1260 and 1264 by supporters of the Bohemian king Ottokar II during his conflict with Hungary's Stephen V. Raised in stone on a wooded ridge above the Gradna valley, it belongs to the network of fortifications that guarded the routes between the Sava basin and the Slovenian lands. Expanded over the centuries into a fortified trapezoidal courtyard, and adapted by successive noble owners as artillery made high medieval walls obsolete, the site was ultimately abandoned to decay. It survives today as a picturesque ruin, with restoration efforts focused on its chapel walls.
