Village Baduy, Indonesia

Village Baduy, Indonesia

The Baduy village lies in a remote area on the slopes of the Kendeng Mountains, in the province of Banten at the western end of Java, surrounded by verdant landscape. Its community preserves ancient cultural values and traditional ways of life, deliberately rejecting the modern technology that has transformed the world around it. Houses are raised on posts and built of bamboo, timber and palm fiber without nails; fields are worked without ploughs or chemicals; and the settlements are reached only on foot. The community is divided between an inner group, which observes the strictest customary law and dresses in undyed white, and outer villages that mediate contact with the rest of Indonesia.
