Agrasen Ki Baoli, India

Agrasen Ki Baoli, India

In the heart of New Delhi, discover Agrasen Ki Baoli, a centuries-old subterranean marvel and remarkable water-harvesting monument unique in its design. It stands as a testament to the cultural, architectural and artistic heritage of Delhi and India as a whole. A baoli, or stepwell, is a well reached by a descending flight of steps, storing water through the dry season and offering cool shelter from the heat; this one narrows dramatically as it drops, with tiers of arched niches and galleries rising along its long stone flanks. Attributed by tradition to the legendary king Agrasen and rebuilt in the medieval period, it is protected as a monument by the Archaeological Survey of India and sits improbably among the office towers off Connaught Place.
