Monastery of Saints John and George of Choziba, Palestinian Territories

Clinging dramatically to a cliff face, the Monastery of Saint George of Choziba, known in Arabic as Mar Jaris, ranks among the world's oldest monasteries, dating back to the 4th century CE. This striking Greek Orthodox institution is suspended above Wadi Qelt, the gorge that carries the ancient pilgrim road between Jerusalem and Jericho, and is reached on foot along a path descending the canyon wall. Destroyed and abandoned more than once in its long history, it was rebuilt in the modern era and remains an extraordinary testament to centuries of monastic devotion carved into the rugged Judaean desert landscape, where hermit caves still honeycomb the surrounding rock.
