Kolomna Town, Russia

Kolomna Town, Russia

Kolomna, one of Russia's most storied towns, blends centuries of cultural heritage with a striking array of sacred architecture recognised for its historical significance. Set where the Moskva River meets the Oka, some hundred kilometres southeast of the capital, it was first named in the chronicles in 1177 and long guarded the southern approaches to Moscow. Its brick kremlin, raised in the first half of the sixteenth century, still anchors a townscape of monasteries, merchant houses and low, brightly painted streets. This documentary journeys through those ancient streets, churches and monasteries, revealing why Kolomna endures as a cherished symbol of Russian tradition and faith.
