The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God dominates the centre of Varna, Bulgaria's principal Black Sea port. Built in the decades that followed the country's return to independent statehood, it belongs to a generation of monumental Orthodox churches conceived as statements of national confidence: massed volumes, domes and a tall bell tower that anchors the city's skyline.
