인케르만 성 클레멘스 동굴 수도원

The monastery of Saint Clement at Inkerman is built into a sheer cliff above the valley that leads down to Sevastopol. Its churches, chapels, cells and stairways are cut directly into the limestone, so that the architecture is mostly subtraction: rock-hewn naves, carved piers, niches for icons and windows opened onto empty air. Christian tradition connects the place with Clement of Rome, exiled to this coast in the earliest centuries of the faith, and the monastery has kept that memory through very different regimes. On the plateau above stand the ruins of a medieval fortress, so the two levels of the site tell complementary stories of defence and withdrawal. The episode films the contrast that makes it so photogenic in 4K: the immensity of the pale rock face and the small, candlelit interiors hollowed within it, still in liturgical use.
