산디에고 레콜레타 수도원 박물관

The Recoleta de San Diego was built as a house of retreat, a place where friars withdrew from the busy convents of central Quito for study, silence and prayer, and its architecture reflects that purpose: a modest church, low cloisters, a garden, and rooms scaled for a small community rather than for display. What it lacks in monumental ambition it makes up in atmosphere and content. The walls of the cloister carry painted cycles, the church holds carved and gilded altarpieces and images of the Quito school, and the adjoining cemetery, with its tiers of niches, remains one of the most evocative corners of the old city. Now open as a convent-museum, the site allows the camera into spaces normally closed. The episode films it as a portrait of the contemplative life and of the artistic culture that sustained it.
