감라: 능선 위의 요새

감라: 능선 위의 요새

Few archaeological sites are as dramatically sited as Gamla. The ancient town clings to a narrow ridge in the Golan, falling away steeply on both sides, its profile resembling the hump of a camel — the origin of its name. Gamla was a fortified Jewish town that fell during the Great Revolt against Rome, and its destruction is described at length by the historian Flavius Josephus, whose account can be tested against what excavation has revealed: the breached wall, the ballista stones, the dense houses stepping down the slope, and a synagogue counted among the oldest yet identified. Because the site was never rebuilt, the plan of the town lies open, uncomplicated by later occupation — a rare condition that makes it exceptionally readable on screen. Gamla is also a nature reserve: griffon vultures nest on the cliffs opposite, riding the updraughts within the frame, and a high waterfall drops from the plateau nearby. The film combines the three registers — landform, archaeology and wildlife — in a single, visually powerful portrait of the Golan.
