인트로드 성, 발레다오스타

The castle of Introd occupies a position that explains itself at first sight: a spur above the point where two high valleys, the Val di Rhêmes and the Valsavarenche, branch away from the main Aosta Valley towards the glaciers of the Gran Paradiso. Whoever held this site controlled the movement of people and flocks between the mountains and the valley floor. The building is remarkable for its plan, unusual among alpine castles — rounded rather than rectangular, its walls following the contour of the rock — and for the successive campaigns of building and restoration that have given it its present appearance, part fortress, part seigneurial residence. Around it lies a rural landscape of hay meadows, stone barns and larch woods, still worked. Filmed in 4K with aerial sequences, the programme situates the castle in the feudal geography of the valley and in the mountain country that made it necessary.
