For most of the twentieth century, public religious building was largely absent from the cities of Soviet Central Asia. The central mosque of Bishkek belongs to the reversal of that history: a large, deliberately monumental complex raised in the Kyrgyz capital in recent years, designed in an Ottoman-inspired idiom of central dome, half-domes and tall pencil minarets. The film reads the building as architecture and as statement — the scale of the courtyard, the geometry and calligraphy of the interior, the acoustics of a prayer hall built for very large congregations, and the flow of worshippers at the times of prayer. It also situates the mosque in the city around it: broad Soviet-era avenues, mountains on the southern horizon, and a society reconnecting with religious practice on its own terms. Filmed in 4K, the programme suits strands on contemporary sacred architecture and on the cultural transformation of post-Soviet Central Asia.
