Capriana stands in the Codri, the forested heart of Moldova, where monastic communities settled precisely because the woods offered seclusion and protection. It is one of the oldest foundations in the country, enjoyed princely patronage in the medieval Moldavian period, and grew into an important religious centre with a significant library. The twentieth century broke that continuity: like most monasteries in the region it was closed under Soviet rule and put to other uses, its buildings neglected and its community dispersed. Restoration after independence made Capriana a symbol of national and religious revival, and the site today combines carefully repaired churches, monks' quarters, an orchard and a cemetery. The film follows the liturgical day, the chant, the care of the buildings and the pilgrims who come at feast times, and reads the monastery as a place where faith and Moldovan identity are closely bound.
