Kazimierz was established beside Krakow as a town in its own right by King Casimir the Great, and Corpus Christi was raised as its principal church, a statement of royal foundation in brick and stone. The Gothic structure imposes itself by height and severity: a long nave, tall pointed windows, a massive tower rising over the low houses of the quarter. Inside, the contrast is deliberate. Successive centuries filled the Gothic frame with Baroque woodwork, altars, stalls and a pulpit shaped like a ship, gilded and theatrical against the bare walls. The church stands within the historic centre of Krakow inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and its position in Kazimierz, a district where Christian and Jewish communities lived side by side for centuries, gives it a particular resonance. Filming here means documenting both a major example of Central European brick Gothic and the layered urban history of one of Poland's most storied quarters.
