Felix Romuliana is one of the most personal monuments the Roman world has left us. Galerius, born in this corner of the Balkans, built a palace here at the end of his reign and named it after his mother Romula - an imperial complex conceived as a homecoming, a retirement and a shrine at once. Within the fortified enclosure the film explores reception rooms and their mosaic pavements, the bath suite, and the temples that gave the site its cultic dimension. It then climbs the neighbouring hill of Magura, where the tumuli and mausolea mark the place of consecration of both Romula and Galerius: the point where a family became officially divine.
