Belgrade exists because of this ridge. The spur where the Sava flows into the Danube commands two rivers and the plains beyond, and every power that reached it fortified it: Roman Singidunum, Byzantine and medieval Serbian defences, Ottoman gates and towers, Austrian bastions cut in the geometry of eighteenth-century military engineering. The result is not one fortress but a stack of them, and the film untangles the sequence, moving from the Roman well and the medieval gate to the baroque bastions and the artillery emplacements above the confluence. The upper and lower towns are surveyed from the air, then walked at ground level, where the ramparts now frame Kalemegdan park - promenades, chess players, monuments and one of the great urban viewpoints of southeastern Europe.
