Niš Fortress is the most complete Ottoman fortification of its kind in this part of the Balkans, and its interest lies as much in what it stands on as in what it is. The walls, gates and bastions visible today were raised during the Ottoman centuries, but they follow the line of far older defences on a site fortified since antiquity. The film walks the circuit from the Istanbul Gate inward, reading the masonry, the cannon embrasures and the reused ancient stone built into the fabric. Inside the enclosure it turns to the Bali-beg Mosque, among the oldest Ottoman buildings still standing in the city, whose careful geometry now shelters exhibitions rather than prayer - a conversion that says much about how the region handles inherited layers.
