The Pasica gorge is so narrow and so difficult to enter that it was possible, during the Second World War, to build a hospital inside it and keep it secret. Slovene partisans installed a series of wooden huts along the stream - wards, an operating room, an X-ray unit, quarters for staff - and ran them under German occupation, treating wounded fighters of many nationalities who were brought in blindfolded so that they could never reveal the way back. Named after the doctor who led it, Franja became one of the emblematic sites of the Slovenian resistance. In 2007 a flash flood destroyed almost the entire complex; it was rebuilt with great care using surviving records and materials.
