Few Mediterranean cities hold as long a Jewish memory as Izmir. After the expulsion from Spain, Sephardic families were received across the Ottoman Empire, and the port on the Aegean became one of the communities where their language, liturgy and trade networks took durable root. Beth Israel, in the seaside district of Karatas, is one of the principal synagogues still in use, and the film treats it as both a building and a witness. The camera works through the ordered geometry of the prayer hall, the bimah, the ark and its curtain, the galleries and the light that enters from the upper windows, then follows the surrounding streets where the community's schools, houses and older synagogues once formed a dense quarter. The programme is careful with what it claims: it does not reconstruct, it records. What emerges is a portrait of continuity in a much-reduced community, and of a place of worship that has outlasted the world it was built to serve. It fits naturally into strands on Mediterranean heritage, Jewish history and living sacred sites.
