Statues explain what a city has chosen to remember. Odesa's monument to Count Mikhail Vorontsov commemorates the governor-general of the southern provinces under whose administration the Black Sea port grew from a recent foundation into one of the empire's leading commercial cities, with the institutions, boulevards and public buildings that came with that status. The film uses the bronze as a way into that period: the ambitions of a frontier administration, the wealth that arrived through the harbour below, and the architectural programme that gave the centre of Odesa its classical character. The camera studies the figure and its pedestal in detail, then widens to the square, the surrounding facades and the daily life that flows around a monument most residents pass without a glance. Rather than delivering a verdict on the man, the programme treats the statue as an object of public memory — commissioned, celebrated, contested and lived with — and as a way of reading how nineteenth-century Odesa wished to see itself.
