Walled City Cartagena, Old Cartagena, Colombia

Walled City Cartagena, Old Cartagena, Colombia

A walk through the narrow streets and grand colonial halls of the Walled City of Cartagena de Indias reveals some of Colombia's oldest and most significant historic buildings, preserved within its centuries-old fortifications. The ramparts that give the quarter its name were begun after the sacking of the port in the sixteenth century and took generations of military engineers to complete, enclosing the old town in a continuous circuit of stone walls, bastions and gates. Within them the plan survives largely intact: shaded plazas, balconied houses in coral stone and lime render, convents, and the arcaded gateway beneath the clock tower that remains the main entrance. The ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.
