Sifnos, Cyclades Island, Greece

Sifnos, Cyclades Island, Greece

An elegant island symbolic of the Cyclades, Sifnos is a place of striking contrasts, where arid mountains meet lush green valleys and monasteries watch over sandy beaches below. Its wealth in antiquity came from gold and silver mines, which paid for the treasury the islanders built at Delphi, and its later renown rests on pottery and cooking: Sifnian potters supplied the Aegean with earthenware, and the island is regarded as a cradle of modern Greek gastronomy. Whitewashed villages such as Apollonia, Artemonas, and the cliff-top Kastro are linked by a network of old stone paths, and hundreds of chapels are scattered across the terraced hillsides, among them Chrysopigi on its rocky islet.
