Wat Phra Singh & Wat Umong Suan, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Wat Phra Singh & Wat Umong Suan, Chiang Mai, Thailand

This film explores three of Chiang Mai's most celebrated temples: the venerated complex of Wat Phra Singh, the ancient temple of Wat Chiang Man just inside the city's north-east corner, and the tranquil forest monastery of Wat Umong Suan Phutthatham lying beyond the city walls. Wat Phra Singh, founded in the fourteenth century, enshrines the revered Phra Buddha Sihing image and preserves in its Lai Kham chapel some of the finest Lanna murals of daily life anywhere in the north. Wat Umong, by contrast, is a place of brick tunnels, weathered stupas and shaded woodland where monks have meditated for centuries. Together they capture the spiritual diversity of Thailand's northern cultural capital.
