Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv stands as one of Ukraine's most striking religious landmarks, renowned for its vivid architecture and profound cultural significance. Built between 1862 and 1882 to mark the ninth centenary of the Christianisation of Kyivan Rus, and dedicated to the prince who brought it about, the church adopts a Neo-Byzantine idiom, its yellow façades gathered beneath seven domes. Its interior is the work of a remarkable group of painters, among them Viktor Vasnetsov and Mykhailo Nesterov, whose murals and mosaics cover the walls in a scheme regarded as a landmark of nineteenth-century religious art.
