Home to one of Europe's best-preserved Roman aqueducts, Segovia's Old Town also boasts Romanesque churches, Renaissance mansions, Moorish city walls, and the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain—layers of history woven into a single UNESCO World Heritage city. The aqueduct's double tier of granite arches, laid without mortar, still strides across the Plaza del Azoguejo at the foot of the old town. Above the confluence of two rivers stands the Alcázar, the royal fortress whose silhouette of slate spires rises from a rocky spur, while the cathedral, begun in the sixteenth century, dominates the Plaza Mayor. The Old Town of Segovia and its Aqueduct were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985.
