At first glance, it looks like something from a fairy tale or a fantasy film set, but this is Kampung Pelangi, or 'The Rainbow Village,' a living Indonesian neighborhood whose residents go about their daily lives amid its vividly painted homes. Set on a hillside in the city of Semarang, in Central Java, the kampung was transformed by a municipal regeneration scheme that repainted its densely packed houses, walls, stairways and alleys in saturated color, turning a modest urban quarter into an attraction that draws visitors and photographers from across the country. The result is an unusual case study in placemaking, where paint alone reframed how a community is seen and how it sees itself.
