Candi Bajang Ratu, Indonesia

Candi Bajang Ratu, Indonesia

Also known as Gapura Bajang Ratu, Candi Bajang Ratu is the ornate temple-gate located in Temon Village, within the Trowulan archaeological site, a striking remnant of the Majapahit Empire's monumental architecture. Unlike the split gateways found elsewhere on the site, it is a roofed portal of the paduraksa type, a single tall structure pierced by a narrow doorway and rising through a stepped, tapering crown, built entirely of the fine red brick that defines Majapahit building. Its surfaces carry delicate relief, including kala masks above the opening and narrative panels on the base. Standing in open ground amid the fields of Trowulan, it is the tallest surviving gate of the former capital.
