Nimrod Fortress, Israel (Part 1)

Nimrod Fortress, Israel (Part 1)

A two-part journey to the ancient ruins of Nimrod Fortress, reached via winding mountain roads overlooking the lush Golan Heights. Built on the southern slopes of Mount Hermon, this medieval Ayyubid castle is known in Arabic as Qal'at al-Subeiba, the 'castle of the large cliff.' Raised in the thirteenth century to guard the road from Damascus to the coast against Crusader advance, it was enlarged under the Mamluks before losing both its purpose and its garrison. Its keep, towers and hidden passages run along a narrow ridge for several hundred metres, and from the walls the view takes in the Hula Valley, the Golan plateau and the snows of Hermon above.
