Ollantaytambo is a town and Inca archaeological site in southern Peru, roughly 72 km by road from Cusco. During the Spanish conquest of Peru, it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance against colonial forces. The settlement occupies the floor of the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba and retains its original Inca street grid, with dressed stone walls, doorways and running water channels still in daily use, making it one of the few continuously inhabited Inca towns. Above it, monumental agricultural terraces climb the hillside to the Temple Hill, where a wall of vast finely joined monoliths marks the unfinished Sun Temple. The town is also the departure point for rail services toward Machu Picchu.
