Justiniana Prima, Serbia

Justiniana Prima, Serbia

Justiniana Prima stands as an ancient Byzantine city in the Balkan interior, its archaeological remains offering a vivid glimpse into the empire's architecture, culture and sacred life across centuries of history. Founded in the sixth century by Emperor Justinian I near the place of his birth, it was conceived as a new capital for the region and granted its own archbishopric. Within the fortified circuit, excavation has uncovered a hilltop acropolis, colonnaded avenues, baths, an aqueduct and a striking density of early Christian basilicas with mosaic floors. Deserted after barely a hundred years, the city survives as one of the clearest plans of early Byzantine urbanism.
