Church of the Ascension, Kolomenskoye, Russia

Church of the Ascension, Kolomenskoye, Russia

The Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye is one of Russia's earliest and most celebrated stone tent-roofed churches, built in the 16th century as a royal chapel near Moscow. Its soaring, pillarless design marked a turning point in Russian church architecture and remains a defining symbol of the country's cultural heritage. Completed in 1532 on the high bank of the Moskva River, it is traditionally associated with the birth of the future Ivan the Terrible. The white stone tent, rising above open galleries and a sweeping view of the river, transposed a form long used in wooden building into masonry, and the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
