Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Russia

Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery, Russia

The Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg is among Russia's most significant Orthodox monastic complexes, founded by Peter the Great in 1710 and honouring the revered medieval prince and saint whose relics were brought here in 1724. Raised to the rank of lavra in 1797, it combines Baroque and Neoclassical building, culminating in the Holy Trinity Cathedral designed by Ivan Starov. Its cemeteries hold the graves of Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky and Glinka, making the grounds a pantheon of Russian culture as well as a place of prayer. Rich in religious and historical importance, it remains an enduring centre of spiritual life and architectural heritage.
