Red Monastery, Slovakia

Red Monastery, Slovakia

Červený Kláštor, meaning "The Red Monastery," takes its name from the distinctive red roofs crowning its historic buildings. Its history is closely tied to two religious orders of the Roman Catholic Church, the Carthusians and the Camaldolese, whose legacies shaped this storied Slovak site. Founded in the early fourteenth century on the bank of the Dunajec, directly beneath the cliffs of the Pieniny on what is now the Polish border, it is among the best-preserved monastic complexes in the country. It is remembered above all for Brother Cyprian, the eighteenth-century monk, pharmacist and herbalist whose famous herbarium survives, and whose legend the documentary follows through the cloisters, church and garden.
