卡莱托考古建筑群

卡莱托考古建筑群

Some places are chosen once and then never abandoned. Kaleto is one of them: a naturally defensible height in north-western Bulgaria, above a river valley, where excavation has revealed the superimposed traces of a settlement fortified and refortified over a very long period. What the visitor sees today is a combination of original remains and partial reconstruction: lines of wall, the outline of a gate, foundations of buildings inside the enclosure, and a walkway that follows the perimeter. The reconstruction is deliberately legible, so that what has been rebuilt can be distinguished from what was found, and the reasoning of the archaeologists remains visible in the site itself. The programme uses the place to explain how an archaeological complex is read: how layers are identified and dated, how a defensive plan can be recovered from foundations alone, and how a site is presented to the public without freezing it into a single period. Filmed in 4K, with aerial views that reveal the plan in the landscape and close work on masonry and finds, it suits strands on archaeology, history and heritage interpretation.
