查邦、苏罗沃诺与查威:东爪哇三庙

查邦、苏罗沃诺与查威:东爪哇三庙

East Java produced a temple tradition distinct from that of the central part of the island: slimmer proportions, a preference for brick, and buildings often linked to the commemoration of rulers rather than to the great state monuments of an earlier age. This programme brings together three of its notable examples. Candi Jabung raises a cylindrical body on a square terraced base, unusual in Javanese architecture and finely moulded in brick. Candi Surowono is small but exceptionally rich in narrative relief, its panels drawing on fables and epic literature. Candi Jawi combines volcanic stone and brick in a single slender tower set within a water-filled enclosure, a striking combination of materials and setting. Filmed in 4K and compared side by side, the three make visible what the East Javanese workshops shared - vertical emphasis, decorative discipline, relationship to water - and where their solutions diverge. A useful, well-structured introduction to a period often overshadowed by Borobudur and Prambanan.
