Set on the rise between the fishing harbour and the alleys of the old town, the mosque known as Al-Bahr owes its name to the sea it faces. It is a modest building by comparison with the larger mosques of the city: a compact prayer hall, a small courtyard, a slender minaret that has served as a mark for boats coming in. Its congregation was drawn from those who made their living from the water, and the building has weathered accordingly, its stone bleached by salt and wind. The programme films it in 4K within its immediate setting, the port below and the roofs of Jaffa above, and treats it as a way into the maritime life of a city whose fortunes have always risen and fallen with the sea.
