厄玛乌—尼科波利斯

厄玛乌—尼科波利斯

Emmaus Nicopolis lies at the foot of the Judean hills, where the road from the coastal plain begins its climb towards Jerusalem — a strategic corridor that has carried armies and pilgrims for millennia. The site preserves the substantial remains of a Byzantine basilica, with three apses still legible in the ground plan, and within them the walls of a smaller church built in the Crusader period, a superimposition that reads clearly on camera. Around them lie mosaics, cisterns, rock-cut tombs and olive groves. The place is one of the locations traditionally identified with the Emmaus of the Gospel of Luke, where two disciples recognise the risen Christ at the breaking of bread; the identification has been debated for centuries, and that debate is itself part of the story the film tells. Today the ruins are cared for by a resident religious community, and the site combines an archaeological park with a place of prayer. The programme balances the two: the reading of walls and mosaics with an archaeologist's eye, and the quieter presence of a community that has made these stones its daily landscape.
