The Holy Trinity Cathedral rises at the centre of the Russian Compound, the walled enclosure built just outside the Old City to receive the very large numbers of Russian pilgrims who once travelled to Jerusalem. Its domes are a fixed point in the city's skyline and belong to an architectural language imported wholesale from the Orthodox north: a compact, centralised plan, thick walls, arched openings and an interior of icons, chandeliers and painted vaults, entirely unlike the Levantine buildings around it. The compound itself tells a wider story — hospices, a hospital, administrative buildings, and later reuses that turned parts of it into offices and public institutions of the modern city, so that a religious complex became embedded in the civic centre of Jerusalem. The film reads the cathedral both as a place of worship, with its liturgy, its chanting and its congregation, and as a monument to the age when European powers competed for presence and influence in the holy city through architecture. Jerusalem's density is the real subject: a Russian cathedral standing minutes from the Old City gates, in the middle of a modern downtown.
