阿尔贝勒山

阿尔贝勒山

Mount Arbel presents one of the most abrupt landforms in Galilee: a cliff that falls in a single sweep towards the plain of Ginosar and the northwestern corner of the Sea of Galilee. From the summit, the view takes in the entire lake, the hills of the Golan beyond it, and on clear days the snow line of Mount Hermon far to the north — a panorama that has made Arbel a fixture of Galilee photography. The cliff face itself holds a network of caves, adapted over time into a fortified refuge with built walls, cisterns and connecting passages hollowed into the rock, reached today by a steep marked descent with handholds fixed in the stone. On the plateau above lie the remains of an ancient Jewish village with its synagogue. The film combines the three: the geology and the raptors riding the cliff updraughts, the human occupation of a vertical landscape, and the lake below, where Galilee's Gospel sites are all visible from a single vantage point.
