希夫塔:内盖夫的拜占庭城市

希夫塔:内盖夫的拜占庭城市

Shivta rises from the flat white expanse of the Negev with no defensive wall and no natural spring — two absences that define the entire site. This was a town built on the ancient routes that crossed the desert, and its survival depended wholly on the capture and storage of rainwater: channelled streets, plastered reservoirs, cisterns and runoff systems that gathered every drop from the surrounding slopes. What remains is one of the most complete desert townscapes anywhere. Streets and house blocks can still be walked; three churches survive with apses, columns and traces of decoration; wine presses recall an agriculture that flourished against the odds. Shivta forms part of the World Heritage listing that recognises the desert cities of the Negev and the trade routes they served, and it is among the clearest places to understand how these settlements worked. Filmed in 4K with extensive aerial coverage, the site is exceptionally photogenic: the geometry of streets and courtyards resolves from the air, while at ground level the pale limestone shifts through gold and rose as the desert light turns.
