The second part of this portrait goes inside. At Sarre, the House of Savoy created a décor with no equivalent in Italy: long galleries whose walls and ceilings are covered with the horns of ibex and the trophies of chamois, arranged in dense geometric patterns that turn the hunt into ornament — and, unexpectedly, into a record of alpine wildlife at a time when the ibex was close to disappearing. Beyond these rooms lie the royal apartments, with their furniture, portraits, photographs and personal objects, and the spaces now given over to a museum devoted to the Savoy presence in the Aosta Valley. Filmed in 4K, the programme documents the decoration in detail, follows the light through the tall windows towards the mountains outside, and shows how a working hunting lodge became a place of dynastic memory — and how the same mountains later became one of Europe's first national parks.
