Gjakova grew around its great bazaar, a dense grid of workshops and trading stalls that made the town a commercial hub of the western Balkans. The Hadum Mosque sits at its centre, the anchor of a religious complex that historically included ancillary buildings serving the neighbourhood. The film examines the classic Ottoman formula at work here — square prayer hall, dome, portico and slender minaret — and the painted and carved decoration that gives the interior its character. The building's recent history is inseparable from its architecture: the mosque and its surroundings suffered heavily during the conflict of the late twentieth century, and the campaigns that followed made restoration a matter of communal identity as much as of conservation.
