槟城,海峡的十字路口

槟城,海峡的十字路口

Penang owes its character to the sea lanes of the Strait of Malacca. As a British trading settlement it drew Chinese, Indian, Malay and European communities to the same few square kilometres, and George Town, the island's historic capital, still shows the result: rows of shophouses with five-foot ways, Chinese clan associations and ancestral halls, mosques, Hindu temples, churches and colonial administrative buildings, all inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The film works street by street, from the wooden clan jetties built out over the water to the ornate townhouses of Peranakan merchant families and the hillside temple complexes above the city. It also looks beyond the centre: Penang Hill, the coastline, and the food culture in which the island's communities most visibly meet. Filmed in 4K with aerial coverage, the programme is a strong stand-alone title for travel, culture and heritage slots.
