Derawar is one of the most imposing sights in Pakistan, and one of the least visited. The fort stands alone in the Cholistan desert, a vast square enclosure whose walls are articulated by dozens of massive circular bastions rising sheer from the sand, built of baked brick laid in patterns that catch the low desert light. Visible from far across the flat horizon, it commanded caravan routes and the water sources that made habitation possible here. The fort is associated with the ruling house of Bahawalpur, and beside it stand a royal mosque of finely worked white marble and the family necropolis, a complex of tombs under domes. Inside the walls, ruined ranges and courtyards are steadily eroding, and the film addresses the conservation challenge directly.
