拉合尔堡

拉合尔堡

Set at the northern edge of Lahore's walled city, the fort was rebuilt in brick by the emperor Akbar in the second half of the sixteenth century, then enlarged by Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, each leaving his own architectural signature. The result is not a single building but a layered imperial stage: audience halls opening onto formal courtyards, the Sheesh Mahal lined with countless mirror fragments, the white marble Naulakha pavilion, and the monumental Alamgiri Gate facing the Badshahi Mosque. Along the western rampart runs the Picture Wall, a vast decorated surface of glazed tile and inlaid figures. Later held by the Sikh court and then by the British, the citadel carries the marks of every power that governed the Punjab. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Shalimar Gardens, it offers a rare architectural narrative in which political history is written directly into stone, tile and marble, and in which each reign can still be read on the ground.
