诺维萨德犹太会堂

诺维萨德犹太会堂

Lipót Baumhorn built synagogues across the Habsburg lands, and the one he designed for Novi Sad is among his most accomplished: a monumental brick composition crowned by a broad dome, with Secession detailing that bends historic forms into something distinctly of its own moment. The film examines the exterior in its street context, then the interior - the sweep of the dome, the galleries, the stained glass and the decorative programme that gives the space its unusual warmth. It also tells the harder half of the story: a community devastated in the Second World War and reduced to a fraction of its former size, and a building that survived them. Today the synagogue functions largely as a concert venue, a use that keeps it open, maintained and full of sound. A strong title for architecture strands, Jewish-heritage programming and Central European history.
