Every photograph of Novi Sad's Liberty Square is organised around the same vertical: the tall spire of the Name of Mary Church. Built in neo-Gothic style at the end of the nineteenth century, when the city was rebuilding its confidence and its centre, it combines the pointed windows, buttresses and tracery of the revival with a roof of coloured glazed tiles laid in geometric patterns - a Central European speciality that catches the light from a considerable distance. The film covers the exterior from square level and from the air, then moves inside to the stained glass, the vaulting and the furnishing of a working parish church. Around it, the square operates as the social heart of the city, and the programme captures that daily traffic. A neat, self-contained subject for sacred-heritage strands and architectural series on Central Europe.
