苏博蒂察阿维拉的圣德肋撒主教座堂

Subotica is celebrated for its Secession buildings, which makes the cathedral of St Theresa of Ávila all the more striking: it belongs to an earlier and quieter world. Built in the eighteenth century as the town's principal Catholic church, it presents a broad baroque front framed by twin towers, and an interior of white plaster, gilded altars and painted panels that has been repeatedly restored. Raised to cathedral rank when a diocese was created for the city in the twentieth century, it remains the focus of Catholic life in this borderland between Serbia and Hungary. The film considers the building as architecture and as a working church, following the liturgical year and the ex-voto devotion attached to its patron. Together with the city hall and the synagogue, it completes a compact three-title portrait of Subotica. Suited to sacred-heritage and architectural strands.
